Staff from a number of schools in the south of island, are delighted to welcome Shaun Dellenty back to the island this week.
Shaun is a highly regarded national speaker, qualified Headteacher and experienced trainer on diversity and inclusion in schools. Shaun has a great deal of experience and credibility of working with a wide range of teachers and young people across the country and internationally. Shaun was honoured by the U.K. Prime Minister for services in positive LGBT+ inclusion in education.
Shaun first visited the Isle of Man in March 2016 when he spoke at the Diversity Conference. He began working with the Department of Education, Sport and Culture in January 2018 where he presented to all senior leaders in Education on the island and began working with our schools and youth groups across the island in order to make them more positively LGBT+ inclusive.
His latest visit starts with a staff training day held at Victoria Road School for all school staff and governors from Victoria Road, Scoill Phurt le Moirrey, Kewaigue, Ballasalla and representatives from Castle Rushen High School.
As part of this training day we will be exploring our heritage and identity. The focus will be about understanding difference and diversity and encouraging understanding and tolerance of difference with compassion.
Shaun’s award-winning training input is intended to ensure that all schools meet the statutory requirements of the Equality Act 2017 and the Department For Education, Sport and Culture’s School Self Evaluation Framework, both of which place a clear expectation upon Island schools to promote ‘equality and diversity’ and prevent discrimination of all kinds.
In keeping with a day focused on diversity, Mohammed Hoque who owns the Curry Club in Castletown and Gandhi in Onchan has kindly subsidised the costs of providing an Indian meal to all those attending the event.
We are delighted to be continuing our work in this important area as we continue our journey aiming to make our island a truly “inclusive and caring society” for all.
